How To Boost Your Self-Esteem

Have you noticed that we tend to be harder on ourselves than we are on others?

We can feel prouder of our friends than we do of ourselves -- even for similar accomplishments.

We are so ready to offer understanding for others' circumstances, respect for the hurdles they've overcome, and overall unconditional love... But when it comes to ourselves, we like to spend a lot time going over all the things we could have done better; faster; smoother; more gracefully; etc.

How often do you give yourself a break?

How often do you feel proud of yourself?

If the answer is "Not so often...", chances are that your self-esteem could use a boost.

With that goal in mind I'd like to share one simple, but incredibly powerful, mental exercise with you. It's one that I like to do when I notice I'm feeling down on myself, and the results are almost instantaneous.

This exercise will help you reconnect with your inner cheerleader, and do absolute wonders for your self-esteem.

A Trip Back In Time

You can do this exercise anywhere. I, personally, prefer to be in a quiet space where there isn't much noise or any other distractions. Just make sure you are as comfortable as possible (and not operating any vehicles).

  1. Close your eyes.

  2. Take a few deep breaths.

  3. Now, imagine yourself as an 8-year-old.

  4. Allow this memory of you to shape the surroundings you are in -- the weather, the smells, how you felt back then -- everything. For example, I usually imagine myself in my family home's garden, because I loved being outside more than anything back then. It's a bit cloudy and gray, but I'm always smiling.

  5. Now... have a look at yourself and your life today through the eyes of your 8-year-old self.

Because when they look at everything you've been through over the years... How you've struggled, fought, persevered, grown, and made it to where you are right now...

There's no way that little kid isn't going to cheer, applaud and think you're the bee's freakin' knees.

"Look at adult you! Look at how badass and amazing you turned out to be, holy moly. You've accomplished THIS? You've tried THAT? You were scared but did it anyway? That person broke your heart but you healed it and tried again? You're so brave! I'm so proud of you."

I've personally never done this exercise and not felt incredibly proud of my life's journey and myself.

That kid is my biggest cheerleader and I love her to death.

A wonderful side-effect of doing this exercise is that it makes me want to keep going, keep learning, keep growing, and make her even prouder.
